The short version
If caps are a side line, a single-needle with a cap frame will do it slowly and badly enough to be worth it. If caps are the business, you need a tubular multi-needle with a real cap driver — below that, every hat is a fight.
The three machine types
Everything sold as a “hat embroidery machine” falls into one of three groups, and the group matters far more than the brand.
- Single-needle with a cap hoop. Cheapest way in. One thread colour at a time and a flat-ish hooping that fights the crown seam.
- Flat-bed multi-needle. Faster and multi-colour, but without a tubular arm the cap still has to be forced flat.
- Tubular multi-needle with cap driver. The arm goes inside the cap and the driver rotates it. This is what commercial shops run.
